Kanye West has sparked the latest in a long line of controversies — this time sending social media into a frenzy of bewilderment over
his bizarre ‘sock shoes’.
The 45-year-old rapper and Yeezy designer faced a barrage of mockery on Twitter and Instagram over the weekend after stepping out
with his ‘wife’ Bianca Censori in Los Angeles, where he was seen modeling the very bizarre footwear.
While Kanye is no stranger to pushing the boundaries when it comes to his personal style, but his latest out-there accessory has
quickly become one of his most divisive.
The ‘sock shoes’ in question feature a padded boot-shaped structure that extends along the shins to the knee — with many critics
comparing them to the protective padding worn by soccer players — however the section that covers the foot appears to be made of
nothing more than a thin sock-like material.
‘[These] ain’t shoes, those are my soccer knee pads my mom sold in the last garage sale she had,’ one person joked on social media,
while another chimed in: ‘Because you have money, don’t mean you got taste.’

‘Kanye is wearing kick pads now?!’ he wrote while sharing an image of Kanye and Bianca on his social media accounts.
His post was soon flooded with more mockery from his followers, with one user writing: ‘Kanye 100% doesn’t know what they are used for.’
‘Protect everything but the toes,’ another person joked – calling attention to the shoes’ lack of padding around the foot area.
Another person compared the sock shoes to the combat boots worn in the video game HALO, while someone else joked that the shoes looked like a collaboration between Kanye’s brand Yeezy, Star Wars character Darth Vader and the Mandalorian, and a scuba diver.
But if Kanye was aware that his funky footwear was going to divide opinion in such a brutal way, that certainly hasn’t stopped him from going all out with his excitement for the sock shoes – with the rapper even filing a trademark for ‘YZY SOCK SHOES’ earlier this month, weeks before he was seen sporting them in LA.
According to TMZ, Kanye filed the trademark application through his holding company, Mascotte Holdings, on May 4, describing the sock shoes in the paperwork as ‘socks with leather soles’.
The application also included various clothing, footwear, headwear, games, toys, and sporting goods.
His filing came just days after Kanye held a private showing for his Yeezy Season 10 collection, entitled ‘YZY FREE’, in LA.
The show featured bald models, with tight white shirts, and black pants, and Frank Ocean’s music playing in the background, however, the sock-shoes were not featured in the show.
Some fans joked that Kanye would surely be left in agony if he accidentally walked over some Lego bricks while wearing his sock shoes
Many pointed out similarities between Kanye’s shoes and those worn by scuba divers, cartoon characters, and even animated video game characters
Adidas made the announcement that they would be selling off the rest of the over $1billion-worth of Yeezy shoes that it still has in it’s stock.
This set-up would lead to Kanye getting 15 per cent of all sales.
Some of the proceeds from the profits will go to charities.
A fan was quick to defend Kanye writing, ‘all are laughing but soon it will be fashion those shoes Kanye is wearing!’
On Monday, Kanye was again pictured as he and Bianca were spotted heading to a gym for a workout.
However, the couple decided to drop by a Chick-fil-A location for some lunch before working up a sweat.
West referenced the fast food restaurant in his 2019 song Closed On Sunday, which was featured on his Christian-themed album Jesus Is King.
The song was derided by critics and even some fans for its blunt mentions of Chick-fil-A.
Kanye was pictured sipping on a soda from the restaurant as he walked through a parking garage before meeting back up with Bianca.
